Wipes in the Pipes

For many people, flushing a moist wipe seems harmless — especially if the packaging says “flushable”. But wastewater systems aren’t foolproof. When wipes resist breaking down, they get caught in pipes, mix with grease / oils and other debris, and form blockages or cause equipment to fail. The accumulated risk can lead to costly repairs, higher utility bills, and even environmental issues when untreated water is involved.

  • If you use wipes (baby-wipes, cleaning wipes, moist towelettes), don’t flush them even if the packaging says “flushable”.
  • Use the trash can instead of the toilet for anything beyond toilet paper and human waste.
  • A small habit change at home helps protect plumbing, prevents disruptions and saves money and hassle for your community.

Other items to avoid flushing:

  • Wipes (baby, cleaning, or “flushable”)
  • Paper towels & napkins
  • Feminine hygiene products
  • Cotton balls, swabs, and dental floss
  • Hair
  • Diapers & baby wipes
  • Medications or household chemicals
